Helsinki Festival: Minyo Crusaders, BCUC

19th Aug 2022, Fri 20:00 - Fri 23:00

Groove is the yarn that the Japanese band Minyo Crusaders uses to sew together Ethiopian jazz, ska, cumbia and Thai pop. The music of the colourful ensemble is based on traditional Japanese folk music, min ‘yō, which is sung as entertainment to accompany daily life, celebrations and work, and for religious rituals.

The ten-strong band is particularly well known for its wild live performances. The audience may not know whether the band is singing about the smallest bird in Japan or the spirits of its ancestors, but it does know what’s important: the musical fabric woven by Minyo Crusaders makes a fierce party dress and the Huvila seats will have been cleared to make room for dancing.

The evening will be opened by the South African BCUC or Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness. The seven-strong line-up will take your breath away with its spiritual-physical party music, and its basslines simply force you to move.
