"SWANA — South West Asia and North Africa, is a new decolonial term used to describe our beloved region … Popularized by SWANA Alliance, a US-based national organization fighting for the liberation of South West Asian and North African peoples, the term is used in a bid to combat the common expressions: “Middle Eastern, Near Eastern, Arab World or Islamic World” that have colonial, Eurocentric, and Orientalist origins and are created to conflate, contain, and dehumanize our people.”  -Celine Semaan
