Helsinki Festival: Taylor Mac

13th Aug 2022, Sat 19:00 - Sat 23:00

Taylor Mac is a theatre and performance artist and Pulitzer Prize finalist who takes audiences out of their comfort zone. Mac is known as a performer and activist for whom the drag spectacle and stripper heels are as natural a part of the show as the history of civil rights.

A 24-Decade History of Popular Music reframes the history of the United States from 1776 onwards. Using popular music, Taylor Mac rewrites this story from the perspective of outcasts and outsiders, turning experiences of oppression into a radical queer performance that has been described in the international press as “one of the great experiences of my life” (The New York Times), “explosive, spectacular, heart-breaking” (The Guardian) and “almost a religious experience” (Sydney Morning Herald).

What’s certain is that audiences will experience an immersive and joyous ritual made up of murder ballads, disco, protest songs, and punk anthems during the approximately 2.5-hour performance. The whole show is completely OTT – in the best possible way.
